The jojoba shrub belongs to the genus Simmondsia and the family Simmondsiaceae. It is an evergreen plant that grows in warm regions and can reach a height of between 0.5 and 2 meters. The jojoba shrub owes its ability to adapt well to dry regions to its deep taproot (up to 3 meters) and its hairy leaves (a succulent plant). The leaves are oval, alternate, and dark green or yellowish in color (so-called “albino” varieties).
The bush bears elongated to oval fruits that contain one to three seeds and may vary in size depending on geographical conditions. The seed itself is not released until it is fully ripe and then has a wax content of up to 60% of its own weight.
Watering the plant is not necessary, but it can increase yields. Since watering should be avoided during fruit development, the jojoba shrub can also be cultivated alongside other citrus species (which have similar growing requirements). Another distinctive feature of the jojoba plant is its high salt tolerance, which makes it possible to reclaim unusable, saline soils.

The jojoba shrub belongs to the genus Simmondsia and the family Simmondsiaceae. In addition to its natural range in Mexico and the United States, the shrub is also cultivated in Israel, Argentina, Peru, and Australia. On plantations, the shrubs are planted in hedgerows, and a minimum ratio of 5:1 female to male plants must be maintained to ensure sufficient pollination of the flowers. Depending on whether the plants were pre-propagated, the first harvest can be expected after 3–5 years (optimal yield after approximately 7–12 years). Following a normal flowering period in the spring, mechanical harvesting takes place from August through October.
Uses, Effects
Wax esters, compounds consisting of a fatty acid and a fatty alcohol, give the oil its characteristic chemical properties. Long carbon chains (38–44 carbon atoms) at both ends of the ester are characteristic of this plant species.
The oil therefore has a high melting point (not until about 7 degrees Celsius) and is resistant to chemical and enzymatic degradation (esters are difficult to break down). As a result, jojoba oil becomes rancid very slowly and, when stored properly, can last up to 25 years.
Enzymatic breakdown cannot occur in the digestive tract, which is why jojoba oil is sometimes touted as a weight-loss aid or as part of a weight-loss diet.
However, oral use is not recommended, as several studies have demonstrated pathological changes in blood counts and internal organs. Although an improvement in skin condition is often observed, most studies do not take endogenous parameters into account.
In pharmacy, the oil is used to mask substances sensitive to oxidation, in reduction diets, and as an appetite suppressant. This takes advantage of the ester’s chemical inertness. Furthermore, it supports the healing process in cases of inflammation (e.g., sunburn).
Jojoba oil absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving no greasy residue, and provides moisturizing benefits. The skin becomes soft and supple, and it can also help strengthen the connective tissue. Jojoba oil has yet another benefit: it is hypoallergenic and can be used on any skin type.
The cosmetics industry takes advantage of these effects and uses the oil in many personal care products, such as shampoos and lipsticks. In addition, the oil has a natural sun protection factor of approximately 4, making it suitable as an additive or even a base for sunscreens. It consists mainly of esters of unsaturated fatty acids and alcohol esters, but contains no triglycerides.
